Champ Dominick Cruz in recovery mode, eyes UFC 128's Faber-Wineland winner
The first signs of life have emerged from Dominick Cruz's zombie hand. He can now open and close it, and more importantly, make a fist.
The newly minted UFC bantamweight champion underwent surgery two weeks ago to repair a severed tendon in his left hand and anticipates a summer return to action, likely against the winner of an upcoming UFC 128 fight between former WEC champs Urijah Faber and Eddie Wineland.

The eighth and final participant in Bellator's fourth season welterweight tournament is now set, as the organization on Thursday confirmed the participation of veteran Jay Hieron. Hieron had previously been reported for the tournament, and it is now official.
"Jay's the perfect fighter to round out our stacked welterweight tournament," said Bellator Chairman and CEO Bjorn Rebney. "He's a true mixed martial artist who has very few weaknesses and a ton of strengths inside the cage. Jay will be a tremendous test for anyone and everyone in this talent rich tournament."
Hieron signed with Bellator late last year after the end of his tumultuous relationship with Strikeforce. It had been expected that he would make the move back to the UFC on his seven fight win streak, but he opted to take part in the tournament field instead.
?I feel great right now. I turned a negative into a positive with my time off and just took the opportunity to sharpen my skills," said Hieron. "When you're training for a fight, the pressure's on, so it'' hard to learn and evolve. It's straight business. With this time off I've been able to focus on a lot of new techniques. Now I'm just excited to get back in there and show off my new arsenal."
In addition to promising some new tricks up his sleeve, Hieron took a shot at his prior organization in Thursday's release.
"This is the exact type of situation I wanted to be in right now. With the tournament format, there's no politics, no golden boys, and nobody getting protected, there's none of that. If you win you move forward, and that's that. That's the bottom line and that's exactly what I was looking for. I feel like I've been through as bad a situation that somebody can go through in their career, and I'm still here. Not only that, but my body's right, I'm healthy, and I feel like it's my time."
Hieron completes a field that will also feature Lyman Good, Dan Hornbuckle, Rick Hawn, Steve Carl, Chris Lozano, "Judo" Jim Wallhead, and Brent Weedman. Season four begins in March, airing live weekly on MTV2.

STRIKEFORCE NEWS: Nick Diaz looking to boxing after bout with Cyborg in San Jose

Strikeforce Welterweight Champion Nick Diaz fights on Showtime this Saturday night, but once that fight is over, he's reportedly looking towards boxing for his next fight.
According to Franklin McNeil at ESPN.com, Diaz's new contract extension with Strikeforce features a clause that will allow him to compete in boxing this year, and it's something he's absolutely looking to do.
Per his trainer Cesar Gracie, they're already in negotiations with boxing promoter Don Chargin to have Diaz take a bout in the super middleweight division, which is contested at 168 lbs. Names being discussed as potential opponents are Fernando Vargas and Ricardo Mayorga.
Vargas hasn't fought since losing to Mayorga in November of 2007, but he's reportedly looking to make a comeback. Mayorga has a bout with Miguel Cotto coming up in March, but he could be a possible opponent later in the year.

He doesn't feel he's making enough money in MMA right now, and thinks boxing will lead to bigger paydays, and Strikeforce is giving him the opportunity to go after that type of a payday. But it's not going to be easy money, and it's not a guarantee that Diaz can enter into an immediate payday. Just because the biggest stars in boxing make a clearly larger amount of money than the top stars in MMA doesn't mean the mid and lower tier boxers are making money hand over fist, so while Diaz can make money in boxing, I don't know that he'll be making what he's thinking at this point.

Justin Wren Kills Pig, Puts 'Poser' Viking Brock Lesnar On Blast

Dude. We almost don’t know what to say. Former “TUF 10” contestant and UFC washout Justin Wren apparently went on a “hunting trip” of sorts recently wherein he ripped out the heart of a wild pig with his bare hands (and a smallish knife) and feasted on it, then took a bunch of pictures of himself covered in the pig’s blood, *then* wrote a post on The Underground Forum basically calling Brock Lesnar a pussy and a “yuppy viking” for growing a shitty beard and killing deer with (of all things) a rifle. I mean, good God, what the fuck?
A 30-second look at Wren’s personal internet photo stream and/or his new website tells us he’s not kidding around about this Viking shit. There’s a picture of him on there in a helmet and animal pelts, carrying a warhammer and a battle axe and (possibly) wearing white jeans. White jeans, dude. Anyway, after the jump you can read Wren’s first-person account of slaying the pig. We have to warn you that it includes phrases like “waterfall of steaming hot blood” and “seeing it's beating heart (and) stabbing it” so, you know, do so at your own risk.

UFC QUOTABLES: Roy Nelson thinks Brock Lesnar is done, details conspiracy theory on Lesnar's TUF involvement

"I think Brock Lesnar is done. I think Brock doing TUF is one way to basically take a situation and make it win-win for him. I think Lesnar doing the show is a way to introduce Junior Dos Santos to the American fan base in the way the show does. TUF introduces 'stars in the making' to the casual UFC fan and while JDS is the number one contender he still needs some help with the American fan base. So the conspiracy basically comes down to the fact that Shane Carwin has no one to fight in June. I think Brock Lesnar will walk off the TUF set and then Carwin will take his spot or Frank Mir will come in to 'save the day' and fight JDS for title contention. The reason I believe Frank would be the guy is because Mir is coming off a win and I was already supposed to fight Shane so fans were already hyped to see it. Or Carwin could move in to face JDS and I could still face Frank but it doesn't really matter to me as to who fights who because all that really matters is the fans want to see me fight somebody. A lot of things could happen over the next six weeks but it seems a bit off that Carwin doesn't have an opponent right now and all of the top heavyweights are spoken for."

Penick's Analysis: I don't agree with any of this, but it's an interesting theory nonetheless. Having JDS on TUF alone isn't a star-making exercise; it's all about the win over Lesnar after the season is over. That's what would seal it. Having JDS against Carwin or Mir would be a massive disappointment after the prospect of Lesnar, and it wouldn't make any sense for the UFC to set up a bait and switch like that. Not with their top draw, and certainly not on purpose. This is a fight that makes sense, and Carwin, while he may not have a top heavyweight competitor to face off against, is likely to get someone like Cheick Kongo, or even someone that's fighting on one of the upcoming cards over the next month or two. There's zero merit to this, and it's a completely nutty theory on Nelson's part. This is simply something the UFC wouldn't do intentionally, and while Lesnar may not be thrilled about doing six weeks of television for the Ultimate Fighter, he has agreed to it, and he will take this fight with Dos Santos in June.

Despite quick UFN 23 win, DaMarques Johnson not celebrating
DaMarques Johnson says the body triangle he applied to Mike Guymon was simply a tool for freeing his hand so he could punch with it.But when Guymon tapped to the hold and rolled onto his side in pain, Johnson was both surprised and disappointed. He didn't expect the fight the end that way, and he wanted to fight on. It just happened so fast.
He's also bummed that he hurt Guymon on his way to victory.
