UFC NEWS: Mike Brown suffered hand injury in loss to Rani Yahya, undergoing surgery
Brown, who has now lost four of his last six fights, took the bout with Yahya on short notice as a late replacement, but was out-worked throughout the fight and lost a unanimous decision. And in that fight, Brown says, he suffered an injury to his right hand.
"Thanks for the continued support," Brown wrote on his official Facebook page. "Wanted to let everyone know that I'm doing fine, but I tore a radial cruciate ligament in my left hand in the first round of the fight. Surgery tomorrow, a crazy month for sure."
Brown didn't mention a timetable on his return, but with consecutive losses he could be at risk of getting cut from the UFC.
Penick's Analysis: It's been an unfortunate and precipitous drop for Brown. Starting with the loss to Jose Aldo late in 2009, Brown has struggled. Though he's picked up two wins since then, his knockout loss to Gamburyan and the consecutive decision losses in his return to the UFC have been disappointing at best, and could lead to the former Champion's dismissal from the UFC. But hopefully he can take this recovery time from hand surgery and get things turned around for himself when he gets back in the cage.

UFC NEWS: UFC 126 officially a sell-out, tickets still available to closed-circuit viewing at Mandalay Bay
The stacked event, headlined by the Middleweight Championship bout between Anderson Silva and Vitor Belfort, airs live on pay-per-view the night before the NFL's Super Bowl. Though the event is now sold out, fans can still purchase $50 tickets to a closed circuit viewing at the Islander Ballroom at Mandalay Bay.
"Fans have been telling me how excited they are for this card ever since we announced the event," UFC President Dana White said in today's release. "This is a stacked card from top to bottom, and fans responded by making UFC 126 a sellout."
The card will also feature two big fights in the light heavyweight division in Rich Franklin vs. Forrest Griffin and Ryan Bader vs. Jon Jones, as well as the UFC debut of former WEC Bantamweight Champion Miguel Torres. Two preliminary card bouts will also air on Spike TV prior to the pay-per-view broadcast.

UFC NEWS: Johny Hendricks vs. Paulo Thiago tapped as late addition to UFC on Versus 3
Both fighters are looking to bounce back from losses on the card, which takes place from Louisville's KFC Yum! Center on March 3.
Thiago has dropped back to back fights to the night's two headliners. After what, at the time, was a bit of a surprising loss to Martin Kampmann after a 3-1 start in the organization, Thiago was then upset by Diego Sanchez in the "Fight of the Night" at UFC 121 last October.
Hendricks suffered his first career loss in December, dropping a disappointing decision to Rick Story at The Ultimate Fighter 12 Finale. The loss put an end to his undefeated streak, which he had run to nine straight fights to begin his career. That included four fights in the UFC, and an extra two fights under the Zuffa banner in the WEC.
Link to Original Source Article
Penick's Analysis: I'd think this one would make the televised broadcast, but until it's officially announced it still could be a part of the prelims with Thiago coming off two straight losses. This is an excellent fight, though. Thiago is desperate for a win, Hendricks wants to make up for a disappointing performance against Story and both are typically in exciting fights. This is just a great fight, so hopefully it makes the night's main card.

Borderline insane Nick Diaz isn't the only reason to watch Strikeforce tomorrow night
The main event at tomorrow night's Strikeforce is guaranteed to deliver a dramatic finish. Nick Diaz brings a classic volume boxing style to the cage against Evangelista "Cyborg" Santos. Santos is your typical brawler, who swings from the hip. Someone is losing via KO or TKO. But as Cage Potato notes, the Diaz fight isn't the only thing that makes Strikeforce's latest offering intriguing. CP lists the other reasons to tune in:
Herschel Walker, Genetic Freak
[...] Did I mention he’s 48? Now, in MMA that may not seem special as we have our own version of a 48-year old wonder in Randy Couture, but Couture looks every year of 48. Walker, on the other hand, could pass for a man in his early 30s and has the physique that men in their athletic primes dream to attain. Herschel Walker, at 48, might be the greatest physical specimen to step foot in an MMA ring or cage…ever.
Roger Gracie, Ground Wizard
The Gracie name is synonymous with the art of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Their legacy extends back to the inaugural UFC some 17 years ago. [...] Fans of BJJ should take notice of his skills, especially when it gets to the ground…and if Gracie wants it to, it will. Gracie is only 28 years of age and still has a future in MMA and potential matchups at 205 with Dan Henderson, “King Mo” Lawal, and the Strikeforce light heavyweight champion, Rafael Cavalcante.
Momentum
Strikeforce has been able to pick up some much needed momentum after a subpar 2010. It began with the December 4th show that went up head-to-head with the UFC. Though the UFC show won the ratings war, Strikeforce had overwhelming shown itself as the better show that night. Then an announcement of a Heavyweight Tournament with 8 of the top 25 heavyweights in the world was made. [...] There’s a lot of momentum behind the Strikeforce brand, the question is, can they keep it up?
There's one more we'd like to add, regardless of a win or loss, Nick Diaz's postfight press conference comments are a must listen. He's been unbelievable in the lead up to the fight.
Diaz is tired of hearing about a possible against middleweight Jason Miller.
"I’d be happy to move up, I’d like to get paid for it you know? I don’t like how people try to say that I didn’t accept the fight with (Mayhem) Miller because I was too small. I never said anything about that," Diaz said. "I said if I’m going to go off track and screw with my whole season, it’s going to screw with my whole year, it’s going to screw with my capabilities of fighting at 170lbs. If I’m going to do that I’d like to get paid in full. I would like to have a reason for doing that. Not just do it at everybody else’s convenience.”
Diaz isn't making a ton of money for these fights and he's had enough.
“I’d like to get paid something extra. Double, triple, something crazy for me to do something extra that would screw up my weight to fight at that weight," Diaz said. "[...] “(Manny) Pacquaio’s making 40 [expletive] million dollars, GSP’s making a couple million dollars. I’m over here [expletive] driving a Honda and my [expletive] breaking down? [expletive] all you mother[expletive]."
Diaz is also tired of hearing about Georges St. Pierre's dominance.
"That’s what I’m saying. They’ve made easy fights for those guys. These guys have got like six or seven fights. Like all easy fights. I’ve never got to fight a guy like (Paul Daley) they brought into fight Josh Koscheck," Diaz said during the Strikeforce teleconference. "So when you bring up fighters like that and tell me they are the best fighters in the world it’s a [expletive] joke. Those guys are all ranked now but I was here first. So let’s fight then. Let’s make it happen, you know?"
According to Diaz, the UFC is propping up phony contenders for GSP.
“People think this guy is better than me and it’s [expletive]. He went five rounds with Josh Koscheck," Diaz said. "I just told you about Josh Koscheck, right? Why shouldn’t I get to fight him? Why are you saying he’s unavailable? Because we fight for different companies?”
We know Diaz is nutty, but this is where he has completely off his rocker. The fighter should be well aware of the fact that the UFC will never co-promote a fight with another organization. He was with the UFC in the past and is fully familiar with the ways of the powerful promotion. If his goal is to push for change, fine, but stop acting like this is boxing with promoters like Gary Shaw, Lou DiBella, Golden Boy, Top Rank and Don King working together on fights.

UFC NEWS: Brock Lesnar excited to coach TUF, says Junior Dos Santos is a "roadblock" on his way back to the title
Lesnar, who has been very reclusive and has shied away from being in the spotlight until his fights, is taking six weeks away from home in Alexandria, Minn. to film this season, but he seems to be in good spirits about the project at the outset of filming.
"It?s thirty below zero in Alexandria right now," Lesnar said. "I had enough of the ice fishing and trouncing around in the snow. My wife had enough too. Dana [White] did all the right things for us to be here. And Spike. Is Las Vegas a place I?d want to be? No. There are other warm places I can think of. But it?s not painful. At least it hasn't been yet. Talk to me in five weeks and we?ll see. But right now, I?d have to say that it?s pretty accommodating."
"I never thought I'd ever be down here to do this," he added. "It's kind of refreshing."
Lesnar is looking forward to the opportunity to help impart his knowledge, as well as that of his coaches, on this group of "young and eager" welterweights. But while some have already questioned his merits as a coach, Lesnar has no worries about their ability to successfully do their job during this six week show.
"You guys can sit and discredit me, but in my mind, I?ve got just as many fights as Junior," Lesnar said. "I've been competing my whole life. I've got a great coaching staff, guys that have been coaching top fighters, top wrestlers. Marty Morgan is a 16 year veteran at the University of Minnesota with National Championship teams, Erik Paulson, Greg Nelson, [Rodrigo "Comprido" Medeiros]. I think we're well capable of coaching underqualified guys to become the next Ultimate Fighter. I?ve got faith in my people. These guys made me a champion, so why can?t we make these young, eager kids successful? I think we can."
"I was the UFC heavyweight champion. What more qualifications do you need? ... I am [excited to be a coach]. Yesterday was pretty cool, being here and picking our teams. It's kind of like being back in the wrestling room again. These kids are young and eager, their eyeballs are this big, they're excited to be there and the atmosphere is good."
Lesnar says his goal for his team on the show is simply to win. He and his coaches want to win, and he believes between the knowledge and experience that he and his staff bring to the table, they shouldn't have any issue helping improve these fighters.
"I've been a human sponge since I've got into this sport, I've tried to evolve and better myself," Lesnar explained. "We're going to train the guys exactly how I'd train for my training camps, we're going to evaluate their fights, we're going to try to make these guys, at the end of the day, win. We want to win this thing, that's our goal."
"I can teach these guys, I've got the staff. I'm not going to be able to get in there and pound with these guys, but I don't know what coaches have even done that, maybe a couple of times [on TUF]. I would have to say the kids that we're coaching don't have a quarter of the background that myself, or my coaching staff, has. So if we can't teach these guys something than there is something wrong."
At the end of the road for this season is a fight with Junior Dos Santos, but while this will make for a big heavyweight showdown, don't expect any trash talk or mind games from Lesnar on the show like we've seen over the past few seasons between coaches.
"I'm here to train and I'm here to make these guys better," Lesnar re-iterated. "Junior Dos Santos is a roadblock on the way to me getting my title back, and that's it. I have no beef with Junior. He's a nice kid. He's just in my way, and I?m gonna do what I can to get him out of the way. I'm not here to stir any s*** up, I don't need to do that. I ain't a mindf***er, I'm an ass-kicker, that's what I try to be."
The former UFC Heavyweight Champion and biggest draw in the sport knows full well that the UFC bringing him on this show, and him agreeing to do so, was a smart business decision. When it comes down to it, the money to be made and the exposure to bring the sport with him on Spike TV for 12 weeks is a good move. However, Lesnar again professed his love for the sport, nipping the belief from many that he's looking to tuck his tail and run from the sport at the first signs of adversity.
"This is business at the end of the day? we're all here on business," he said of The Ultimate Fighter. "Dana White understands the business, I definitely understand the business. At the end of the day, me and my ugly face on Spike TV and people getting to see Junior Dos Santos I'm sure we're going to have a good pay-per-view buy.
"I love this sport. I do. I would not be here if I didn't enjoy this. I could definitely do something else with my life, but for the time being this is who I am and this is what I want to be. If I'm here to reach new households for the sport I think it's a good thing."
Penick's Analysis: At least for the early part of this show, it looks like Lesnar will be a straight-forward coach, and with the staff that he's got with him he is absolutely going to be an asset to the welterweights that find their way onto his team. I'd encourage people to watch the full interview (search "Brock Lesnar Interview: Part 1" posted by "heavy" on YouTube), as the context of his comments and his demeanor when making them is important as well. Lesnar is calm, he seems genuinely interested in helping these fighters out, and he knows being on TV for this show is going to be a good thing overall. The nice thing about this season as well is that it won't bring the manufactured bad blood and rivalry or the forced trash talking that we've seen recently, especially in Josh Koscheck last season. This will be two heavyweights who believe they're two of the best in the world at heavyweight, competing with these fighters for six weeks and preparing to fight for a title shot. It's straight-forward, it's going to be entertaining, it's going to be memorable, and I'm looking forward to the March 30 debut on Spike.

UFC NEWS: Fight for the Troops 2 a success, Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund trustee believes third event to come in 2012
With the original Fight for the Troops event in December 2009, the UFC helped to complete the National Intrepid Center of Excellence by raising nearly $5 million. This year's event is going to help fund the research into traumatic brain injury to which the center is dedicated. IFHF trustee Marty Edelman talked after the event and expects a third event from the UFC in 2012 for the fund.
"Our relationship with Dana White, and Frank and Lorenzo Fertitta, has been both personal and professional and philanthropic for years now," he said in an interview with MMAJunkie.com. "This is 'Fight for the Troops 2,' and you know how each UFC fight has a number? Well, we'll do No. 3 probably next year, and we'll just keep going until all the needs of our young, wonderful warriors and their families are taken care of."
"We determine the need, and so far, we've never failed in raising the money we need," he said. "So we just keep doing it until we have enough. We have about $13 or $14 million for research. We'd like to get to $20 million. And we'll do whatever we need to to get there."
Penick's Analysis: Saturday's event was a very well produced fund-raiser, and though it's slightly counter-intuitive to raise money for traumatic brain injury research with a sport that can cause damage to a competitor's brain, the UFC does a great job with these events. It was a fun night of fights, and helped do a lot of good for this very good cause. The video packages for the soldiers afflicted by TBI from their time in combat were heartbreaking, and that the UFC was able to help bring more money to the research of these injuries was a great thing. A third event in 2012 will be very welcome for all involved.

STRIKEFORCE NEWS: Alistair Overeem vs. Fabricio Werdum coming April 9, event could come to Japan
According to Josh Gross at ESPN.com, Strikeforce will bring the Alistair Overeem vs. Fabricio Werdum and Brett Rogers vs. Josh Barnett bouts on that date, though no venue is yet set.
However, while locations in the U.S., Canada and Brazil are in play, Gross says Japan is the front runner for the event. The April card will also mark the return of Strikeforce Lightweight Champion Gilbert Melendez, likely against Tatsuya Kawajiri.
Link to Original Source Article
Penick's Analysis: If Strikeforce pulls off the event in Japan, especially with Barnett on the card, their commitment to drug testing their own event will be heavily scrutinized. Regardless of whether or not he tests clean, it's not going to look good for the organization supposedly conducting their own testing when they're running an event not under the control of a commission. That goes doubly so if the CSAC rules not to re-license Barnett in California. That said, if they can pull it off it will make for a unique Strikeforce event, and will get the Japan card out of their system so they can bring the semifinals and the finals to their main crowd in the U.S.

STRIKEFORCE NEWS: M-1 CEO Vadim Finkelchtein to request "strict drug testing" throughout Strikeforce Heavyweight World Grand Prix
"Two out of eight fighters in the tournament previously failed a drug test," Finkelchtein stated (translated by LowKick.com). "Obviously, I'm talking about Josh Barnett and Antonio Silva. We want fair competition for everyone, so that's why I will ask the commission to perform a strict drug testing."
"Fedor is not using any kind of substance to enhance his performance, and will be ready for any kind of testing. So if the commission decides to follow our suggestion, we'll be ready."
After their first hand experience with Josh Barnett, in which a lucrative fight on Affliction's third card never came to fruition due to Barnett's third failed steroid test, Finkelchtein says he doesn't want to have to go through that again.
"Our organization paid a heavy price after the cancelation of the fight between Josh Barnett and Fedor. We did a lot of promotion for this fight, which in the end did not take place. That's why as a promoter and manager, I don't want this to happen ever again."
The tournament kicks off with two quarterfinal bouts on February 12 in New Jersey, as Andrei Arlovski and Sergei Kharitionov square off in addition to Fedor vs. Silva.
Penick's Analysis: If it's going to entail the same testing procedures for each fighter and it's going to be uniformly applied throughout the tournament, it's not unreasonable to want to see strict testing done. But, if Strikeforce were to run in Japan as Scott Coker has stated he wants to do, or another commission that doesn't test, such as Texas, they'd have to take care of it all on their own. Again, provided it gets applied widely, and for each fight, then they should go for it, but they can't single fighters out and hold things up for testing if the other fights aren't being subject to the same thing.

Jon Jones fighting Ryan Bader and expectations at UFC 126
When Jon Jones takes on Ryan Bader at UFC 126, he won't just be fighting the All-American wrestler from Arizona. Jones will be fighting to meet the expectations foisted upon any athlete who shows promise early. The light heavyweight has been a fan favorite since he started in the UFC, but with a large legion of fans comes heavy expectations. From MMAFighting.com:
"Meeting people's expectations is something I do worry about, and it's something Greg [Jackson] tells me not to think about," said Jones. "He says, 'You know Jon, you don't even need to win a fight, when you think about it. You're 23 and you're still learning. You're still a baby, so no fight for you should ever be a big, must-win fight for you, and no name or no opponent besides the cream of the crop should even effect you. You have so much time, a setback right now would only make you better.'"
It's hard to believe that he's been fighting for just under three years, and has just six fights with the UFC. Jones made a name by picking up two wins over Jake O'Brien, Andre Gusmao and Stephan Bonnar with flashy moves like spinning elbows. He was disqualified in his fight with Matt Hamill for throwing an illegal elbow, but that hasn't stopped Jones from using the effective technique. He won his next two fights via TKO, with his elbows stopping both Brandon Vera and Vladimir Matyushenko.
Those wins make plenty of fans wonder when Jones is going to get a title shot, putting more expectations on his broad shoulders. That's a heavy load for any man. With the mark he's already made on the UFC, it's easy to forget that Jones is just 23 years old.
UFC NEWS: Georges St. Pierre, manager Shari Spencer part ways
But on Thursday, the two sides announced an "amicable" split in their working relationship. In a press release, the reason given for the split was that "They felt they had a different vision for the future of Georges' career and it was best to remain close personally but dissolve their business relationship."
The two spoke highly of each other in the release, and made it clear there's no animosity involved in this separation.
Said St. Pierre, "Shari has been very valuable to me and my career over the last several years. We broke through a lot of barriers together and so I will always be grateful to her and call her my friend."
Said Spencer, "I am extremely proud of the representation I provided to Georges and the incredible opportunity to have partnered with an athlete of his caliber. I am thankful for the trust that he displayed in me in managing his career since mid 2007 and I wish him the best going forward."
For now, St. Pierre will remain with the Creative Arts Agency, and is expected to hire a new manager shortly.
Penick's Analysis: St. Pierre feels he has gone as far as he can with Spencer as his manager. As he said, he remains grateful to her contributions in his career to this point, and they remain friends, but he's likely now looking to move to a higher level. As with all things in this matter, it was likely also driven by money, and St. Pierre likely felt that necessitated a new person in charge of that end of his career; we'll probably see some new and even bigger things from the best fighter on the planet as the next few years unfold.

UFC NEWS: Pat Barry deflects criticism following Fight for the Troops 2 win - "It's impossible to make everyone happy"
?I've already had bad things said to me as soon as I got out," Barry said at the night's post-fight press conference. "[I've had people say] ?Hey man, good fight, but what happened in round one?' I'm getting bad text messages already. That's always going to happen. No matter what, some people are just going to hate your guts. It's impossible to make everyone happy."
The first round of the fight was a very tentative round, with Beltran circling the outside and content to work the clinch on the cage, while Barry remained hesitant to engage throughout the round. But Barry said that was all part of the plan.
"That was an absolute strategy on his part and my part," Barry said. "Joey Beltran, statistically on paper, I'm the better stand-up guy. He's the better wrestler, jiu jitsu, maybe all-around guy, but I'm the better stand-up guy. So when the bell rang, he walked backward toward the cage. That's a trap. I don't know if anybody noticed that, but I was supposed to run at him, take him to the ground, put him against the cage, so I stood on the circle. That was the gameplan: I'm going to stand on this blue circle in the middle of the octagon, and you're going to have to go to me."
"For the first part of the fight, the first round, he didn't come to me. I could have either gone to him and broken my gameplan, or he could have walked straight to me and broken his. It was kind of a tossup. Sorry it turned out to be a slow start, but we both had a strategy."
Barry picked it up in the second round, beginning the assault on Beltran's lead leg with kicks, mixing in high kicks along the way. But while he continued that into the third round, he also allowed Beltran to continue clinching and landing strikes, and nearly gave the fight away until a late surge in the final minutes of the fight. Barry, however, isn't going to let the criticism get him.
"Everybody has a bad day eventually," he said. "Certain things just build up, build up, build up. I hadn't had a cranky fight in a long time. Do I feel it's behind me? No. I'm still hearing about kickboxing matches that I lost 10 years ago. It's never going to go away."
"Am I past that? I'm fine with it. Am I still gonna hear about? Of course, but that's just how it goes."
Penick's Analysis: Barry, who was very emotional after the fight as he detailed his family's military past, had a lot on his mind in this fight. He can be a bit erratic at times, and hasn't been the most impressive in his fights in the Octagon, but when he's on his game and is using his kicks and strikes effectively he's a lot of fun to watch. He allowed Beltran to get far too much offense in after hurting him badly, especially in the third round, but he still did enough to get a win. Hopefully the next time out he's at his best for more than just a few minutes of the fight, as he can still do a lot of damage to a lot of people in the sport.

UFC QUOTABLES: B.J. Penn more concerned with showing his "fighting spirit" at UFC 127 than winning
[Me] and Jon Fitch are in two different places in our lives. All these fighters are really, really, really concerned about one thing, winning; and it's not that I'm not concerned about that, but I've been in their shoes for a long time that's all I was concerned about too, but more concerned then
winning I want to show everybody my fighting spirit, what happens when I step into the ring. It's either going to be the best win, best loss or best draw you ever f***ing saw (laughs). I've stepped into that ring. It's just that everybody's in different places in their lives, he's looking for title shot, George [Sotiropoulos] is looking for a title shot, all these people are looking to come up, some people looking to win to keep their job and this and that, I'm just looking to show my fighting spirit."
-B.J. Penn talks to MMASports.com.au about his UFC 127 headlining fight with Jon Fitch, and being at a different stage in his career than many other fighters.
Penick's Analysis: If B.J. is out to prove to himself that he's still a great fighter, and he's just out to lay it on the line regardless of the outcome, then fans are in for a great main event next month in Australia. Penn at his best is one of the most entertaining fighters to watch in the cage, and like he said he's got a great test in the welterweight division, as Fitch has established himself as the best of the best after Georges St. Pierre in the division. I'm extremely excited for this fight, as both present very real and very dangerous challenges for the other, and it makes for a great stylistic matchup that should be highly entertaining.

Champ Dominick Cruz in recovery mode, eyes UFC 128's Faber-Wineland winner
He can now open and close it, and more importantly, make a fist.
The newly minted UFC bantamweight champion underwent surgery two weeks ago to repair a severed tendon in his left hand and anticipates a summer return to action, likely against the winner of an upcoming UFC 128 fight between former WEC champs Urijah Faber and Eddie Wineland.
BELLATOR NEWS: Jay Hieron officially confirmed as eighth and final participant in season four welterweight tournament
"Jay's the perfect fighter to round out our stacked welterweight tournament," said Bellator Chairman and CEO Bjorn Rebney. "He's a true mixed martial artist who has very few weaknesses and a ton of strengths inside the cage. Jay will be a tremendous test for anyone and everyone in this talent rich tournament."
Hieron signed with Bellator late last year after the end of his tumultuous relationship with Strikeforce. It had been expected that he would make the move back to the UFC on his seven fight win streak, but he opted to take part in the tournament field instead.
?I feel great right now. I turned a negative into a positive with my time off and just took the opportunity to sharpen my skills," said Hieron. "When you're training for a fight, the pressure's on, so it'' hard to learn and evolve. It's straight business. With this time off I've been able to focus on a lot of new techniques. Now I'm just excited to get back in there and show off my new arsenal."
In addition to promising some new tricks up his sleeve, Hieron took a shot at his prior organization in Thursday's release.
"This is the exact type of situation I wanted to be in right now. With the tournament format, there's no politics, no golden boys, and nobody getting protected, there's none of that. If you win you move forward, and that's that. That's the bottom line and that's exactly what I was looking for. I feel like I've been through as bad a situation that somebody can go through in their career, and I'm still here. Not only that, but my body's right, I'm healthy, and I feel like it's my time."
Hieron completes a field that will also feature Lyman Good, Dan Hornbuckle, Rick Hawn, Steve Carl, Chris Lozano, "Judo" Jim Wallhead, and Brent Weedman. Season four begins in March, airing live weekly on MTV2.

STRIKEFORCE NEWS: Nick Diaz looking to boxing after bout with Cyborg in San Jose
According to Franklin McNeil at ESPN.com, Diaz's new contract extension with Strikeforce features a clause that will allow him to compete in boxing this year, and it's something he's absolutely looking to do.
Per his trainer Cesar Gracie, they're already in negotiations with boxing promoter Don Chargin to have Diaz take a bout in the super middleweight division, which is contested at 168 lbs. Names being discussed as potential opponents are Fernando Vargas and Ricardo Mayorga.
Vargas hasn't fought since losing to Mayorga in November of 2007, but he's reportedly looking to make a comeback. Mayorga has a bout with Miguel Cotto coming up in March, but he could be a possible opponent later in the year.

Penick's Analysis: Judging by Diaz's comments in last week's pre-fight conference call and this news, it's clear why he re-upped with Strikeforce. He doesn't feel he's making enough money in MMA right now, and thinks boxing will lead to bigger paydays, and Strikeforce is giving him the opportunity to go after that type of a payday. But it's not going to be easy money, and it's not a guarantee that Diaz can enter into an immediate payday. Just because the biggest stars in boxing make a clearly larger amount of money than the top stars in MMA doesn't mean the mid and lower tier boxers are making money hand over fist, so while Diaz can make money in boxing, I don't know that he'll be making what he's thinking at this point.

Justin Wren Kills Pig, Puts 'Poser' Viking Brock Lesnar On Blast
(Props: Photobucket)
Dude. We almost don’t know what to say. Former “TUF 10” contestant and UFC washout Justin Wren apparently went on a “hunting trip” of sorts recently wherein he ripped out the heart of a wild pig with his bare hands (and a smallish knife) and feasted on it, then took a bunch of pictures of himself covered in the pig’s blood, *then* wrote a post on The Underground Forum basically calling Brock Lesnar a pussy and a “yuppy viking” for growing a shitty beard and killing deer with (of all things) a rifle. I mean, good God, what the fuck?
A 30-second look at Wren’s personal internet photo stream and/or his new website tells us he’s not kidding around about this Viking shit. There’s a picture of him on there in a helmet and animal pelts, carrying a warhammer and a battle axe and (possibly) wearing white jeans. White jeans, dude. Anyway, after the jump you can read Wren’s first-person account of slaying the pig. We have to warn you that it includes phrases like “waterfall of steaming hot blood” and “seeing it's beating heart (and) stabbing it” so, you know, do so at your own risk.

UFC QUOTABLES: Roy Nelson thinks Brock Lesnar is done, details conspiracy theory on Lesnar's TUF involvement
-Roy Nelson talks to BloodyElbow.com and details his conspiracy theory regarding the UFC's decision to put Brock Lesnar on The Ultimate Fighter.
Penick's Analysis: I don't agree with any of this, but it's an interesting theory nonetheless. Having JDS on TUF alone isn't a star-making exercise; it's all about the win over Lesnar after the season is over. That's what would seal it. Having JDS against Carwin or Mir would be a massive disappointment after the prospect of Lesnar, and it wouldn't make any sense for the UFC to set up a bait and switch like that. Not with their top draw, and certainly not on purpose. This is a fight that makes sense, and Carwin, while he may not have a top heavyweight competitor to face off against, is likely to get someone like Cheick Kongo, or even someone that's fighting on one of the upcoming cards over the next month or two. There's zero merit to this, and it's a completely nutty theory on Nelson's part. This is simply something the UFC wouldn't do intentionally, and while Lesnar may not be thrilled about doing six weeks of television for the Ultimate Fighter, he has agreed to it, and he will take this fight with Dos Santos in June.

Despite quick UFN 23 win, DaMarques Johnson not celebrating
But when Guymon tapped to the hold and rolled onto his side in pain, Johnson was both surprised and disappointed. He didn't expect the fight the end that way, and he wanted to fight on. It just happened so fast.
He's also bummed that he hurt Guymon on his way to victory.
