UFC NEWS: Jorge Santiago confirms UFC 130 fight with Brian Stann

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

Jorge_Santiago_3.jpeg
Jorge Santiago is officially back with the UFC, as his management team at Authentic Sports Management announced his signing with the organization late Tuesday.

After spending the past few years in Japan, Santiago is ready to get back to action in the UFC for the first time since 2006.

"I had a great experience in Japan, but I am now really excited to fight again in the UFC and conquer more fighters in the U.S.," Santiago said.

In addition to the official announcement from his management, Santiago confirmed in an interview with MMAWeekly.com that he has signed a bout agreement to meet Brian Stann at UFC 130 in May.

"I finally signed today. It's official, I'm a UFC fighter and I'll be fighting May 28 against Brian Stann. That's what's up," Santiago revealed.

"After two years of fighting in Japan, there's nobody else to fight. This stage in my life I was thinking about having more challenges for myself. I'm in the Top 10, been ranked for two years already. This was big stuff, giving my belt away, and ask for my release to come back to the United States and do it one more time in the UFC."

UFC 130 takes place from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, headlined by the Lightweight Championship bout between Frankie Edgar and Gray Maynard.

Link to MMAWeekly.com Interview

Penick's Analysis: This fight is big for the middleweight division. Santiago's return is exciting in itself, and I can't wait to see how he handles the challenge that Stann presents. UFC 130 is going to be a really good card and Santiago's first fight in the UFC since 2006 is a big part of that.

UFC NEWS: Four UFC 127 preliminary card bouts coming to Facebook, Ion Television this Saturday

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

UFC_127_poster_180_9.jpg
The UFC is bringing more preliminary card fights to fans this week with UFC 127, as the organization announced that they will air four fights this weekend on Facebook and on Ion Television.

The UFC ran preliminary card bouts on Ion Television and on Facebook for the first time in January with UFC 125 and UFC Fight for the Troops 2, respectively. This is the first time they've returned to Ion Television with prelim bouts, though they have run another fight on Facebook during UFC 126.

Saturday's Facebook prelims will see light heavyweights Anthony Perosh and Tom Blackledge square off, as well as a featherweight bout between Tie Quan Zhang and Jason Reinhardt beginning at 8PM ET at Facebook.com/UFC.

Then, at 9PM ET on Ion Television, Ross Pearson meets Spencer Fisher, and James Te-Huna squares off with Alexander Gustafsson.

Perosh fights for the first time since losing to Mirko Cro Cop in the UFC's last trip to Australia in February of 2010. Blackledge makes his UFC debut in the bout.

Zhang makes his UFC debut after suffering his first career loss by decision to Danny Downes at WEC 53. Reinhardt, meanwhile, returns for the first time since since January of 2008, and makes his UFC debut as well.

Pearson, season nine winner of The Ultimate Fighter, looks to bounce back from a loss to Cole Miller in his last bout, his first loss in the UFC. Fisher, meanwhile, looks to follow up on a win over Cole Warburton at UFC 120 last October.

Te-Huna gets back into the Octagon for only the second time, one year after making his debut on the UFC's first trip to Australia in February of last year. The New Zealand native has fought his entire career in Australia, and now meets perhaps his toughest test in the 10-1 Gustafsson. Gustafsson enters this fight with a 2-1 mark in the UFC, his sole loss coming at the hands of highly touted prospect Phil Davis.

Following the preliminary card airings, UFC 127 airs live on pay-per-view, headlined by a welterweight bout between Jon Fitch and B.J. Penn.

Penick's Analysis: This is much better than just having two bouts on Facebook as it appeared to be last night. Pearson-Fisher and Te-Huna-Gustafsson are both very solid fights, especially the light heavyweight fight, and getting them on television is great. Having the other two fights on Facebook is just a bonus, and the UFC is doing great in getting so many of their fights on television this year.

UFC NEWS: UFC confirms Rampage vs. Hamill, Alves vs. Story for UFC 130 main card in May

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

JacksonRampage_150_68.jpg
The UFC has confirmed two more bouts for the main card of their Memorial Day Weekend event, as Quinton "Rampage" Jackson vs. Matt Hamill and Thiago Alves vs. Rick Story are both official for UFC 130.

The card, taking place on May 28 from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, features a headliner between Frankie Edgar and Gray Maynard for the UFC Lightweight Championship.

Rampage looks to get a title shot with a second straight victory after his November 2010 victory over former champ Lyoto Machida. Rampage, who hasn't fought for a title since losing the title to Forrest Griffin in July of 2008. A win over Hamill likely puts him next in line to face the winner of Mauricio "Shogun" Rua vs. Jon Jones.

Hamill looks to put his name in the mix of top contenders with a win over Rampage that would be his sixth straight win. He's coming off a victory over Tito Ortiz back at UFC 121 in October, and took this bout when Thiago Silva was removed from the fight.

Alves is out to build on one of his best career performances in a three round dissection of John Howard at UFC 124. The win halted a two fight losing streak to Georges St. Pierre and Jon Fitch, and he looks to make his way back into the title picture with a run.

Story enters this fight after a win over Johny Hendricks in December. Following the big win, his fifth straight, Story and his camp expressed a desire to fight top ten competition. They're getting just that in top five ranked Alves, and this fight marks Story's biggest opportunity in the UFC to date.

UFC 127 post-fight news: Bonuses, Bisping and Fitch

UFC president Dana White wasn't at the UFC 127 post-fight press conference, but the main players from the fights were.

-- The UFC awarded $75,000 bonuses to its top UFC 127 performers: Brian Ebersole and Chris Lytle won Fight of the Night, Kyle Noke won Submission of the Night for his quick choke of Chris Camozzi and Mark Hunt won Knockout of the Night for his nonchalant KO of Chris Tuchsherer. The UFC also announced that Aussie James Te Huna donated his fight purse to Queensland Flood relief.

-- After Bisping erupted after beating Jorge Rivera, White told him to keep his cool. Bisping then commented on a report that Rivera's camp believed that Bisping's illegal knee was intentional. For that and for spitting at Rivera's corner, they thought that Bisping should be suspended.

"Doesn't surprise me. One classless move after another," Bisping said. "The knee wasn't intended. I just threw it too early. He just needs to accept that he's lost and move on."

He did. He got under my nerves. He upset me. He embarrassed me."

Bisping did confirm that he is considering moving to Australia, but also said that he is a prod Englishman.

-- After fighting to a majority draw with B.J. Penn, Jon Fitch said that he was disappointed in his performance and that he wished his title shot was not a question.

Still, Fitch's performance in the third round was impressive. He outstruck Penn 134-0, landing 42 power strikes.

HANSEN: Strikeforce killing momentum, hurting their Heavyweight Grand Prix by delaying second set of quarterfinals

By: Rich Hansen, MMATorch Columnist

Staff10HansenRich_150_4.jpg
NEWS: Remaining Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix Fights Will NOT Happen on April 9 As Originally Announced

(Or "Scott Coker determined to destroy Strikeforce more efficiently than even Dana White could do").

How many fights does Josh Barnett have to steal away from MMA fans before promoters stop hiring him? Strikeforce will reportedly now be running in California on April 9, which means that since Josh Barnett failed to piss clean on three separate occasions, refuses to cooperate with the CSAC, and refuses to give one half of one percent of a damn for you, me, and all the other MMA fans in the world, the Barnett-Rogers fight and the Overeem-Werdum fights will be delayed for at least a few more weeks, if not much longer.

Sherdog reported late Monday night that the April 9 event is now looking to have co-main event fights of Gilbert Melendez vs. Tatsuya Kawajiri and Nick Diaz vs. either Paul Daley or Tyron Woodley, with the second set of Heavyweight Grand Prix quarterfinal bouts no longer taking place on the card.

Of course, Daley has a fight scheduled for February 26 and might be smart enough to not want to fight Nick Diaz a mere six weeks later. And that's assuming he defeats Yuya Shirai on that night. As for the possibility of Woodley accepting the Diaz fight, Woodley also might be smart enough to not take a fight with Nick Diaz on six week's notice as well. And he's probably smart enough to know that going from Tarec Saffiedine in his last fight to Nick Diaz in his next might be too large of a step up in competition.

So because Scott Coker decided to sign and back an apparently un-licensable Josh Barnett when he could have just as easily slotted a deserving Daniel Cormier into the back-end of the Grand Prix bracket, the following side-effects will damage his company:

1: It looks like we are all going to have to wait at least another month or two (Strikeforce isn't planning on running an event in May, although that might change now) for the quarterfinals of the Grand Prix to finish. The first two fights of the Grand Prix delivered Showtime their best ever ratings for MMA, and that momentum is going to be severely stunted as a result of Josh Barnett's existence in the tournament.

2: If Daley declines to fight Diaz on short notice, if Daley loses in Japan, or if Woodley declines to fight Diaz, then the April 9 card is going to be weak, at best. And once you consider the relative weakness of the March 5 card, that'll be two shows in a row that appear weak on paper. And yes, I realize that a show that is weak on paper can be the best show of the year, and vice versa. But considering how hot Strikeforce has been recently, this would be a real body blow.

3: Strikeforce's credibility will be shot if they can not come through with the remaining quarterfinal fights on the exact date they promised. Strikeforce will forever etch into granite their reputation of being the promotion whose tail wags the dog if they can't deliver what they promise. It is one thing to float ideas, like they did with their abortive Middleweight Grand Prix. It's one thing to get railroaded by the Russian mafia. But like my daddy* used to say, "Once is a fluke, twice is a trend, and three times is time to cut bait.**"

*I never called him 'Daddy.'
**He never actually said that.

4: There is now a MAJOR competitive disadvantage in the tournament. Let's theorize that the remaining quarterfinal fights happen in May. Let's say after those two fights that the two winners (let's call them Barnett and Overeem) want a reasonable 13 weeks between fights. That places the semi-finals somewhere in the middle of August. That would mean Barnett and Overeem on three months notice would be fighting against Kharitonov and Silva respectively on six months notice. Those disparities are, believe it or not, the BEST case scenarios. Check this out...

Showtime and Strikeforce both know that the number one reason that the Fedor vs. Silva card drew so heavily was because they marketed the show as a "Grand Prix." Showtime will of course want the semi-finals to commence as quickly as possible, so as to re-establish the momentum of the Grand Prix. Would you really put it past the corporate overlords at Showtime to pressure Coker, Overeem, and Barnett into accepting semi-final fghts in five or six weeks notice? As if the unbalanced bracket wasn't unfair enough, now we're working short rest into the equation as well? And here's yet another worst case scenario...

Imagine if Overeem and Barnett advance in dominant fashion, and one of them gets slightly injured. Not torn ACL bad, but just bad enough where they might need four or five months instead of three months before either man is ready for the semi-finals. Now that the tournament, which was originally slated to end by September, has already been delayed, would Coker replace a slightly injured fighter for the sake of expediency? Imagine if Alistair Overeem knocks out Fabricio Werdum in 30 seconds, but breaks a bone in his hand and can't take a semi-final fight booking until three or four weeks later than Ken Hershman and Scott Coker want. Do they slot Fedor into his spot? Shane Del Rosario? Do they delay the tournament another handful of weeks, knowing that the world will blow up if they made everyone wait forever for the first round to finish, but then replace a fighter in an attempt to speed things up?

On a personal note, I am just so pissed off right now. I feel betrayed and completely used. I spent so long resisting Strikeforce's charms, and just when I finally got sucked in, when I finally made it known to anybody that would listen that Strikeforce was not only hot but completely solid, they kicked me square in the crotch. Right now, I feel like the Jennifer Aniston character in all of the s***ty movies she gets cast in.

All of this begs the following poll question:

Who's in charge of Scott Coker's promotion?

A) Ken Hershman
B) The Fighters
C) Scott Coker
D) Both A and B
E) Anybody but Scott Coker

If you answered E, you are correct. Coker has officially lost control of his company. The lack of response to this report along with several tweets from reporters talking about how people within the company having no clue what's going on for this event attest to that. And wouldn't you know it; he lost control at a time when Strikeforce was flying higher than they had ever flown. Poor Icarus.

[Editor's note: Strikeforce has yet to comment on the Sherdog report, but has not yet denied that these Grand Prix fights will be moved off the April 9 card either. With the event expected to take place in just over five weeks, they have also yet to officially announce a venue or location for the card, and reports suggest multiple rumored states for the event have not even been approached by the organization to host the event]

Following a failed attempt to reclaim his belt and a second loss to Frankie Edgar in 2010, Penn considered calling it quits.

BELLATOR NEWS: Raphael Davis completes season four light heavyweight tournament field

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

Logo_Bellator_150_243.jpg
Bellator Fighting Championships has filled up the field for their first ever light heavyweight tournament, as they announced late Friday the addition of Raphael Davis as the eighth and final participant.

Davis has competed twice previously for Bellator and brings a nine fight win streak into this tournament field. He brings a record of 10-1 overall into the tournament.

"Raphael's been with us for a while now. Last year he sat with me at the Hard Rock and said that 'all he wanted was the chance to compete in a World Title Tournament,' and I'm thrilled that we are able to provide him that opportunity," said Bellator Chairman and CEO Bjorn Rebney.

"I've been waiting for so long for this Bellator Light Heavyweight Tournament to finally happen," said Davis. "I've been seeing all of these other champions get their belts put on them after their fights and I want one of those belts for myself. That has always been my goal ever since I first started fighting - I just want to win a belt. I want to be a world champion. Now I'm just really excited to finally have that chance."

Davis joins Daniel Gracie, Nik Fekete, Chris Davis, D.J. Linderman, Tim Carpenter, Christian M?Pumbu, and Richard Hale in the field, which will air throughout season four beginning in March, airing Saturdays on MTV2.

UFC 127 Roundtable

by Michael David SmithB,J. Penn battles Jon Fitch at UFC 127.After a slow weekend in mixed martial arts, the action heats back up on Saturday night when the UFC heads to Australia for UFC 127, featuring B.J. To get geared up for the fight card, I engaged Ben Fowlkes in a discussion about where Penn and Fitch fit in the welterweight division (Ben disagrees with me about where Penn should rank if he wins), what Chris Lytle can prove by extending his current winning streak to five and how close George Sotiropoulos is to lightweight title contention.

Bellator wants you to spend Saturday nights with them

Bellator Fighting Championships kicks off its fourth season on the first weekend of March, and again, they'll be on a new network and on a new night. MTV2 will air Bellator's fights live on Saturday nights starting Mar. 5.

The good news is that the tournament-based promotion will be live, something they didn't have with Fox Sports, their previous home. The bad news is that Saturday nights are owned by the UFC and Strikeforce. Will Bellator face a conflict?

"That's part of the magic we have here," [Bellator CEO Bjorn] Rebney said. "When I was sitting down with the MTV folks, they said, 'Look, if there's a big UFC event, if there's a pay-per-view event, we'll kick our show an hour or two earlier so that it can be an MMA night for fans.' They can go from MTV2 to Spike TV or go from MTV2 to pay-per-view.

Bellator's hope is that MMA fans can make a night of it. For MTV and Spike's parent company, Viacom, this is a dream come true. Fans can stay with their company for hours of MMA watching. On Mar. 19, for example, a fight can watch Bellator's event in Oklahoma before tuning into UFC 128.

But Bellator will run into Strikeforce trouble on their very first week. The same night that Bellator kicks off their welterweight tourney in California, Strikeforce will put two belts on the line in Ohio, and in their regular timeslot, the two would conflct for an hour.

What Might Have Been: Fedor Emelianenko in the UFC

by Michael David SmithOn July 28, 2009, the Los Angeles Times reported that Fedor Emelianenko and the UFC were finalizing a deal that would result in an announcement by the end of that week of the top heavyweight in mixed martial arts finally agreeing to step into the Octagon.

That report was wrong, Fedor went to Strikeforce instead of the UFC, and now Fedor has lost two fights and lost the mantle of Best Heavyweight in MMA. The heavyweight division in the UFC, meanwhile, has moved on and looks a lot different now than it did a year and a half ago.

But what if the report had been correct? What if Fedor had accepted the UFC's contract offer and had been with the UFC over the last year and a half? Some thoughts on what would have happened are below.

NSAC budget cuts eliminate out-of-competition drug testing; Kizer seeks alternatives

A budget crunch has left the Nevada State Athletic Commission unable to employ one of the most significant deterrents to the use of performance enhancing drugs in professional competition.

Two years after the influential regulatory body announced it would conduct out-of-competition drug testing, legislators completely withdrew funding for the program.

The NSAC will soon decide whether to press legislators on a proposal to reinstate testing, possibly by diverting funds within the commission's budget.

Dennis Siver Says Bout Against George Sotiropoulos Will Be FOTN

Dennis Siver and George Sotiropoulos will meet up in an important bout at UFC 127 as the winner could see himself in contention for a shot at the UFC Lightweight title and Siver talked about his destiny to one day be a champion and his plan to win Fight of the Night in Australia:

"My knockout power has allowed me to rise up in the division very quickly. People like to watch my fights because I'm always pushing the pace and putting on exciting fights. I think Georges is one of the top contenders for a title fight. If I beat him, I'll move higher on the contender bracket. That makes winning this fight so much more important. To be a UFC title holder is my dream. It's my destiny. I will do anything to reach that goal. I will give my best on fight night. Everyone should watch. It will be fight of the night."

Better Decade: Fedor Before Werdum, or Silva Through Belfort?

by Michael David SmithTwelve days ago, I would have said that Fedor Emelianenko was the best fighter in the history of mixed martial arts. Now, I'm not so sure. The combination of Anderson Silva's spectacular knockout of Vitor Belfort at UFC 126 and Fedor's loss to Antonio Silva a week later might force me to reconsider and pick Silva as the greatest in MMA history, and Fedor as No. 2.

It's a close call, and any argument about the best fighter in MMA history is rife with problems. The biggest problem being that there's not much history to MMA. It's a new sport, and it's a really new sport if you want to use an apples-to-apples comparison of fighters competing under modern rules with weight classes. In fact, I think the arguments about the best fighters in MMA history are so complex that I don't want to deal with them here.

Instead, I'd like to ask a simpler question: Who had a better decade: Silva in the 10 years up to and including his victory over Belfort, or Fedor in the 10 years before the loss to Fabricio Werdum that started his current two-fight slide?

UFC QUOTABLES: George Sotiropoulos not bothered by getting passed over for title shot

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

LogoUFC_150_790.jpg
?I'm not bothered [by being passed over] because I look at everything with a long-term view. In the bigger picture, it's like a little pebble in the road. If I was looking at it as the be-all, end-all right now, maybe I'd make it bigger than it is. If you're looking to get in one day and out the next, fine, but that's taking a big risk. I want to make a long-term investment in myself.

The year I had in 2010 was kind of a coming out party to some people who didn't know who I was or what I'd been doing for years in this sport. I had done a lot in this sport and had fought a lot of top guys all over, but the big stage that the UFC provides kind of showed people who hadn't been paying attention what I could do.

I had committed myself to this sport for the long-term long ago and everything I have done is an investment in getting better and being the best I can be. And that's what I'll continue to do until the day I leave. Nothing is ever going to change."

-Lightweight contender George Sotiropoulos talks to Yahoo! Sports about not worrying about being passed over for a title shot. Sotiropoulos meets Dennis Siver at UFC 127 in Australia next weekend.

Penick's Analysis: Sotiropoulos has done nothing but win fights since entering the UFC. He's on an eight fight winning streak, with seven of them coming in the Octagon, and he'll be expected to make it nine straight against Siver at UFC 127. He'll be "in the mix" as Dana White says once that fight is over, but he'll have as much of a claim to a shot at the title as anyone else in the division, if not more of one.

According to Jon Fitch, milk is a bad choice

Yahoo! Sports looked at the vegetarian habits of fighters last week, with their motives both humanitarian and for health. In this video, Jon Fitch talks about his issues with milk. (Note: Fitch isn't a registered dietician, so take his advice with the recommended dosage of salt.)

Has anyone told Fitch that milk is delicious? Because it is and I am enjoying a glass of yummy skim milk as I type this.

Fighters have worked plenty of different diet plans, everything from Diego Sanchez and stevia to the popular Dolce Diet and Fuel the Fighter. The important thing to remember is that fighters' should be finely tuned to their training because they expend an insane amount of calories in training, and they have to time their eating habits around weighing in and fight night. That doesn't mean their nutrional choices are wrong, but their needs are very different than an average Joe or Jane.

Twitter beef: Forrest Griffin and Tito Ortiz spar online

Forrest Griffin and Tito Ortiz have fought twice, and both have ended in a split decision, one win for each fighter. Either those losses didn't sit well with Griffin, or he was bored and needed some entertainment on Thursday.

Griffin tweeted a self-deprecating message, comparing himself to Ortiz's worst qualities. Ortiz responded with several tweets ripping on Griffin.

Tito, let's talk for a second. I've taken one psychology class in grad school, so I'm pretty sure that qualifies me to analyze you. Is it possible that you have some unresolved anger and insecurity over the recent rough patch your career has hit? And just who are you angry at, Tito? Is it Forrest or is it this guy?

Work it out, Tito. Channel that anger towards your March 26 bout with Antonio Rogerio Nogueira. Or maybe try some yoga and scented candles.

ENNIS: Lay of the Land - The Middleweight Division (February 2011 - Part One)

By: Shawn Ennis, MMATorch Senior Columnist

Anderson_Silva_UFC_still_180_22.jpg
This will be the first of two parts breaking down the UFC's middleweight division. This week will focus on the top of the division, while next week looks at the rest of the middleweights and what those outside the UFC have to offer.

Amid the turmoil that has reigned atop most of MMA's weight divisions, two champions have stood head and shoulders above the rest of the competition for sustained amounts of time. Anderson Silva has ruled the middleweight division since 2006, and while some will say that there are chinks in the armor of the world's best fighter, still none have been able to beat him. So what does the future hold for the middleweights? Let's take a look at the top of the division this week, where havoc has been wrought and the field is laying wide open waiting for the next contender.

THE CHAMP

Anderson Silva (28-4): By the time it's all said and done, it will likely be debated for years whether Anderson Silva or Fedor Emelianenko was the top fighter of this era, or perhaps the greatest fighter ever. Since we're focusing on middleweights here and there are simply no more superlatives to describe what Silva has done, let's just list his accomplishments. If you don't count Yushin Okami's DQ win in 2006, Anderson Silva has not been defeated in six years. Since the Okami fight, he's gone 14-0. Ten of those fights have been for titles (his last fight in Cage Rage was against Tony Fryklund for that belt). He has gone the distance only twice in that same period, while fighting top contenders every time out. Say what you will about the quality of the middleweight division, but no one in any division can boast that accomplishment. And maybe the division just looks so bad because no one can touch its champion. During his run, he's beaten three UFC champions, a Pride champion, an Abu Dhabi submission grappling champion, a national champion wrestler, and a Greco-Roman Olympian. He holds the record for most consecutive UFC wins with 13 (the next highest is eight by GSP), most consecutive title defenses with eight (GSP is tied for second with five), and most overall title defenses. There has never been a more dominant force in MMA than Anderson Silva. We're going to leave GSP out of the mix for the moment because that fight deserves its own column, and also he needs to take out Jake Shields before we can entertain it anyway, but for now, while we may all agree that Silva is a tough guy to figure out, there's no denying his greatness.

THE CONTENDER

Yushin Okami (26-5): The prevailing wisdom here is that Okami will need to take a backseat to GSP once he dispatches Jake Shields, but should that fail to happen, the long-time fringe contender will likely be next in line. With his last win over Nate Marquardt, Okami probably sealed his status as the quasi-number one contender, but with the amount of time that could pass while the GSP-Silva superfight takes place, anything can happen. That's especially true with this next crazy person hanging around the corner.

THE WOULD-BE CONTENDER

Chael Sonnen (25-11-1): With consecutive wins over Dan Miller, Yushin Okami and Nate Marquardt, Sonnen put himself in the position of surprise contender last year. After an epic buildup that showcased some of the most bizarre (and effective) trash talk we've ever seen in MMA, Sonnen did the unthinkable and almost cashed the check that his mouth had written. For almost five rounds, Sonnen dominated Silva, taking him down at will and hurting him with punches on the feet. But we knew going into the fight that Sonnen's Achilles heel was submission defense, and with less than two minutes remaining in the final frame, Silva locked up a triangle choke/armbar and forced the tap. Since then, Sonnen's fall from grace has been epic. A positive steroid test has been followed by a guilty plea to real estate fraud, and Sonnen has been suspended indefinitely from the UFC, pending the resolution of his "personal problems." The remaining question is whether Sonnen will get a title shot immediately upon his return, or whether he'll get another fight first. I can't imagine they'd risk the rematch with Silva by putting Sonnen in there with anyone else, quite honestly.

A STEP OR TWO AWAY

This division is wide open when it comes to potential title contenders. There are very few fighters with any momentum, and those who have a little have built it up on the backs of lower-tier fighters. I've got three guys in mind for this category, but I think I'm being pretty generous by putting anyone at all in here. For the sake of not having an empty category, here we go. (As a disclaimer, this could all very easily change by the time the next contender is decided. That's how wide open the division is).

Brian Stann (10-3): After an inauspicious run at light heavyweight and a thorough thrashing at the hands of up-and-comer Phil Davis, Stann decided to move down to a weight that is better suited him, and he also joined up with the renowned Greg Jackson. Since his move to 185 lbs., Stann is 2-0 and has looked very good. He's got a fight with Wanderlei Silva coming up at UFC 130. A loss to the fading legend would set Stann back quite a bit, but with a win he could be positioned to fight one of the next two guys for a title shot (or at least a trip into the upper echelon if the title timing isn't right, which it likely won't be).

Michael Bisping (20-3): If you'd told me after Bisping's loss to Wanderlei Silva that I'd have him in this category a year later, I wouldn't have believed it. But wins over the uber-tough Dan Miller and Yoshihiro Akiyama and an upcoming tilt with the rejuvenated Jorge Rivera at UFC 127, Bisping has positioned himself nicely for another run at the top. And this time Dan Henderson's right hand won't be waiting for him on the way.

Jorge Rivera (19-7): Another one I wouldn't have believed. Rivera had an impressive win over Nate Quarry last year to follow up his win over Rob Kimmons. With a great backstory, a penchant for exciting fights, and a small window to take advantage of, Rivera is a dark horse for a title shot if he can get through Bisping in a couple of weeks, but I certainly wouldn't discount him with the division looking like it does. Does he have a shot against Silva? Probably not. But then again, who does?

UP AND COMERS

Jesse Bongfeldt (21-7-1): After a sloppy first two rounds in his UFC debut against Rafael Natal (the famed Octagon jitters, perhaps?) Bongfeldt looked downright dominant in the third, earning two elusive 10-8 scores from the Montreal judges and ending up with a draw. If "Water" can come out like he did in the third round of that fight when he makes his next appearance, we may just have something on our hands. It should be noted, by the way, that the Ontario native was coming off of a 15-month layoff to take over for an injured Jason MacDonald, and he has not lost since a 2007 knockout at the hands of Jonathan Goulet. Bongfeldt had won seven straight prior to the draw. A date with a TUF veteran like Rich Attonito or more of a grappler like Tom Lawlor could be interesting.

Maiquel Falcao (26-3): One of the more bizarre storylines coming out of UFC 123 was the release of Gerald Harris following his loss to the debuting Falcao. Harris had won three straight going into the fight, including a candidate for knockout of the year with his vicious slam of Dave Branch in July. Following a thrilling first round, which was revealed later to have been missing nine seconds due to a timekeeper error, the fight stalled resulting in a 10-minute circlefest. Somehow that fight used up all the goodwill that Harris had built and made people forget that if the first round had been properly timed, Falcao likely would have won via submission, as he had sunk a rear naked choke in the waning seconds. But either way, if the first round and eight straight wins is an indicator of what we can expect from Falcao, this could be a rising contender. Falcao could be thrown to the wolves (as they exist in the middleweight division) quickly considering his performance in the Harris fight; a showdown with someone like Nate Quarry or Kendall Grove could be in his future.

Court McGee (13-1): Did anyone really expect Court McGee to win The eleventh season of The Ultimate Fighter? I didn't. And did anyone expect him to keep on winning after the show? Well, that's what McGee has done, defeating Ryan Jensen via arm triangle after surviving the first round and a half against the bigger man. McGee has proven durable thus far, but he won't have an easy road ahead of him as the middleweight division is thin but very competitive to see who can break through to the next level. I'd like to see how a fight would go with maybe Aaron Simpson, or the next guy on the list.

Brad Tavares (7-0): One thing we know about Phil Baroni is that he's not the fighter he once was. Another thing, though, is that he's very durable. Baroni has been beaten down by everyone from Frank Shamrock to Amir Sadollah, but he's not easy to stop. Tavares did it in the first round, and left no doubt. Granted, the competition will be more stiff from here on up, but Tavares has shown thus far that he has the tools to compete.

I'll be back next week with a rundown of the rest of the division. Until then, enjoy the fights.

Definitions/Parameters:

The Champ: Self-explanatory

The Contenders: Fighters who could fight for the title immediately and be taken as legitimate contenders. Fighters coming off of a loss will not typically be in this category.

A Step or Two Away: Fighters who could be in contention for a title with another victory or two over legitimate competition.

Up and Comers: Fighters who have no more than three fights in the UFC, who have shown promise. They're not always undefeated, but they have potential.

The Pool: Other fighters of note within the division, who could work their way into the top three categories by going on a run and/or proving themselves/proving themselves again in the Octagon. Also those outside the UFC who could make an impact.

BELLATOR NEWS: Hector Lombard to meet Falaniko Vitale in non-title action at Bellator 44

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

Logo_Bellator_150_237.jpg
Bellator Middleweight Champion Hector Lombard will be back in non-title action in the upcoming fourth season, as MMAJunkie.com reports that he will meet Falaniko Vitale at Bellator 44.

Lombard captured the Bellator Middleweight Championship when he won the very first Bellator middleweight tournament in season one. He then clocked two straight knockouts in under a minute in non-title action in Bellator before defeating season two tournament winner Alexander Shlemenko by decision in their season three title bout.

Lombard has now won 16 straight fights, and is unbeaten in his last 21 fights dating back to a November 2006 loss to Gegard Mousasi.

Vitale makes his Bellator debut on a two fight winning streak. He returned to action in 2010 after a 17 month absence that followed a loss to Frank Trigg in Strikeforce in 2008. He brings a 28-9 record throughout a near 12 year career spent mostly in his home state of Hawaii.

No city or venue has been chosen for the May 14 event as of yet, but the fight is expected to headline the MTV2 broadcast.

Link to Original Source Article

Penick's Analysis: Lombard has been extremely successful in his MMA career, but it's hard to shake the thought that his talent is being wasted right now. He's fighting competition that is, honestly, beneath him at this point considering his record and the way he's looked in winning a lot of his fights. He could easily be plugged into Strikeforce or the UFC and compete with most, if not all, of the middleweights in either division. But being in Bellator, he's relegated to these types of fights. Vitale is certainly a much more credible opponent than "Whisper" Goodman was last August, but he's nowhere near a top 25 opponent in 2011, and someone like Lombard should regularly be fighting that level of opponent.

Nonito Donaire vs Fernando Montiel Shows Why MMA Is Safer Than Boxing

by Michael David SmithSaturday night's Nonito Donaire vs. Fernando Montiel fight was a big event for boxing, and a big victory for Donaire. But it was also something else: A demonstration of why mixed martial arts is a safer sport than boxing.

One of the key differences between MMA and boxing is that when an MMA fighter gets knocked down by a punch, he has to be alert enough to protect himself, or else the fight is over. In boxing, when a fighter gets knocked down, the referee starts counting, and the fighter has until a 10 count to get back to his feet. Which means a boxer whose brain is concussed badly -- as Montiel's brain was concussed when Donaire knocked him down in the second round -- can stagger back to his feet to take more punishment.

Donaire hit Montiel with a huge left hook and then a right uppercut as Montiel was tumbling to the canvas, and when Montiel hit the floor it was frightening: Montiel's arms went straight up over his head and his legs were twitching, and it looked like he was having some kind of seizure. In MMA, a competent referee would have immediately called off the fight, and the ringside doctor would have rushed in to treat the fallen fighter.
