UFC 128's Rua familiar with Jones' position, prepared for "fight of my life"
Once upon a time, it was the Brazilian slugger who played the role of feared up-and-coming stud on the verge of greatness.
But now, it's "Bones" who is looking to become the sport's next bona fide superstar with a win in the featured bout of next week's UFC 128 event. No problem, says Rua. Bring it on.

STRIKEFORCE NEWS: WWE officials deny report of negotiations with Cristiane "Cyborg" Santos
Per Meltzer, WWE officials have denied the report, and say that they have not been in talks with the top MMA fighter in women's mixed martial arts.
Meltzer also speculates that the report could have been leaked due to current contract negotiations with Strikeforce, as Santos has not fought since defeating Jan Finney last June. Per a comment from Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker, the organization hopes to have something finalized for Cyborg's return soon.
Cyborg is reportedly looking to receive compensation close to what her former rival Gina Carano received when the two set a ratings record in their August 2009 bout.
Link to Original Source Article
Penick's Analysis: I couldn't see exactly how she would have fit into the WWE mold, so it being nothing more than posturing in contract talks makes sense. She is the biggest name in women's MMA outside of Carano, and she deserves to be paid accordingly. She's not going to receive Carano money, however, as she doesn't move the needle quite as much as the former "face of women's MMA." Still, she's a very popular women's fighter and should be paid more than the $25,000 she received in the Carano fight. Hopefully they can finalize her deal soon and get her back in the cage, as lengthy layoffs that are not for injury reasons are a waste of everyone's time, money and effort.

STRIKEFORCE NEWS: April 9 event coming to San Diego, headlined by Diaz vs. Daley
Strikeforce will make their debut in San Diego, bringing the event to the San Diego Sports Arena with a pair of title fights in lieu of the second set of quarterfinal bouts in the Heavyweight World Grand Prix.
Headlining the night's card at the 16,000 seat venue is the Welterweight Championship bout between Nick Diaz and Paul Daley. The co-main event will feature the return of Gilbert Melendez in his first fight in a year as he defends his Strikeforce Lightweight Championship against Tatsuya Kawajiri.
Ticket information for the card is expected to be made available sometime this week.
Link to Original Source Article
Penick's Analysis: This will be a very entertaining card, but because of the debacle taking place with the Heavyweight World Grand Prix, they are going to be left with a lot less time to hype and promote these two title fights and this card, along with being overshadowed by the Grand Prix not taking place on the date it was initially announced. This weekend's Columbus card and the April 9 event are not going to benefit from the ratings boon they saw on February 12. Now they're spinning the move to June as an attempt to "capitalize" on the February ratings, but running four months later, with two months between major events, isn't going to help them in that respect.

UFC NEWS: UFC reportedly looking to run an event in Sweden in November
Per the report, no locations is yet set for the event, but the UFC is targeting both Malmo and Stockholm, with interest from venues in both cities.
Also according to the report, Sweden has the third biggest fanbase for the UFC in Europe, with only those fans in the U.K. and Germany attending more events. This would mark the UFC's very first event in Sweden.
Link to Original Source Article
Penick's Analysis: If Sweden is the third biggest fanbase in Europe then their entrance into the country makes sense as their next stop in Europe. As they continue to expand, they'll eventually attempt to run in most countries around the world. Hitting up Sweden was likely always in the plans, and that will now likely come before this year is out.

Ebersole's manscaping at UFC 127 could start a trend
Brian Ebersole's surprising win at UFC 127 came with unorthodox striking, a Fight of the Night bonuns and most importantly, epic manscaping. Ebersole's chest hair was shaped into an arrow pointing up, something he's done for the past few years to show his opponent where to hit. Could his excellent UFC debut inspire more MMA manscaping? We have a few suggestions.
Forrest Griffin: The UFC light heavyweight and original Ultimate Fighter has been pushing his book about surviving the apocalypse, so why not really commit to it and show it on his chest?
Dominick Cruz: The UFC bantamweight champ is known for being light on his feet and dancing around the cage, so he may as well let opponents know what they're getting into before the fight starts. A pair of ballet slippers should do the trick.
Georges St. Pierre: The French-Canadian wears the fleur-de-lis on many of his walkout shirts and usually shows up at his fights waxed (we are assuming) and tanned, but shaving a fleur-de-lis into his chest hair at UFC 130 would truly show devotion to Quebecois.
Clay Guida: The Carpenter is a huge fan of "The Big Lebowski," and is just crazy enough to try this. It would take a talented manscaper to do the job, but who wouldn't want to see the Dude represented on Guida's chest?

Dan Henderson Beats Rafael Feijao Cavalcante, Wins Strikeforce Belt
Henderson, the former Pride champion of two different weight classes, has won the Strikeforce light heavyweight title, defeating Rafael "Feijao" Cavalcante Saturday night in Columbus, Ohio with a third-round technical knockout.
Henderson got off to a slow start but put on a tremendous finish, drilling Feijao with a hard right hand to knock him down, then finishing him with about half a dozen more punches on the ground before referee Dan Miragliotta stopped the fight, awarding Henderson the TKO win.
China's Zhang opens UFC 127 Facebook fights with a win
Tiequan Zhang is still a bit of a mysterious character, but there's no question about the fact that he's a pretty solid MMA competitor.
Zhang dropped to featherweight for his UFC debut and smoked Jason Reinhardt in less than a minute at UFC 127. Zhang locked on a guillotine choke (pictured below) and nearly put Reinhardt out at the 0:48 mark of the first round in Sydney, Australia.
Zhang (13-1, 1-0 UFC, 1-1 WEC) is the first fighter from China to compete in the UFC. He made his Zuffa debut in 2010.
He looked extremely comfortable in this one, as he stalked Reinhardt from the start. Zhang followed the shorter fighter around the cage looking to land something big. He closed space along the cage and when Reinhardt dropped his head a bit, Zhang went for the choke.
Reinhardt pushed forward and the fight fell to the ground where he was trapped in the nasty choke. He waited until the very last second to tap. When Zhang released the choke, Reinhardt didn't move, he was groggy and out of it.
Zhang, 32, nicknamed "The Mongolian Wolf," is a sanshou specialist. His trainer said he's also recently been elevated to a jiu-jitsu brown belt. China is an untapped MMA breeding ground internationally. With a strong martial arts background, China could be quite the source for talent over the next five years. The Chinese fight fan market is also untapped and a big reason why UFC put Zhang's fight on Facebook.

Perosh crushes Blackledge in UFC 205 debut
Anthony Perosh hasn't carved out much of a reputation in the UFC, simply because he's been a card filler at heavyweight. The Aussie was overmatched against the big guys. Today, down at more comfortable weight, he was able to show off his vaunted jiu-jitsu game and blew through Tom Blackledge.
Perosh (10-6, 1-3 UFC) missed on his first two takedowns, but when he scored a third with 3:13 left in the first, Blackledge was nearly helpless off his back. Perosh softened up Blackledge by raining down punches and then settled into the Brit's half guard. He quickly passed to the mount where Blackledge bailed and spun to his stomach. That was a bad move because Perosh locked on a rear-naked choke just seconds later forcing the tap.
Perosh suffered UFC losses in 2006 to Christian Wellisch and Jeff Monson. He took a beating against Mirko Filipovic last year at UFC 110.

Dan Henderson vs. Rafael Feijao Cavalcante Fight Video
Dan Henderson beat Rafael Feijao Cavalcante with one of his trademark hard right hands, followed by several more punches on the ground, to earn the Strikeforce light heavyweight title on Saturday night. The video is above.
Cavalcante had won the first round of the bout while Henderson had won the second, but in the third it was short and quick: Henderson landed that punch and knocked Feijao down, and Feijao appeared to hurt his head landing on the canvas and was quickly finished.
Henderson, the former Pride champion in two weight classes, is now the Strikeforce champ as well.

Jorge Gurgel is a jiu-jitsu whiz, but often frustrated fans for not using his jiu-jitsu skills in fights. Brian Bowles Talks Return After Spending Year On The Couch w/ Injuries
"I've been sitting on the couch for the past year. I'm excited to get back in the cage ? especially in the UFC. It's something I've been waiting on to happen. I really feel like I just need a win and to stay healthy. Domination, if it happens, will be icing on the cake. But right now I'm just focused on staying healthy and the win. The division's gotten tougher. It kind of evolved while I was out. A lot of people surpassed me ? their careers just kept going on, and mine was just on hold. And I think it just got tougher. And I think now that (bantamweight) is in the UFC, people are going to start dropping down. It's just getting better and better. Peoples' careers have evolved. They're more relevant than me ? some of them have fought two or three times since I've been out. People kind of forgot about me. I just have to go out there and get a win and remind them that I'm here and that I perform well."

White UFC 127 vlog: Recovering from broken eye, Koscheck is surfing!
Dana White's latest vlog takes the viewer from Hawaii to Sydney. White arrives in Australia and hits Bondi beach where UFC fighters and Octagon girls are surfing.
That's right Brittney Palmer and Arianny Celeste are soaking wet in bathing suits (3:00 mark).
The craziest scene is seeing Josh Koscheck emerging from the water (4:05 mark).
That's the same Koscheck, who suffered a broken orbital bone against Georges St. Pierre at UFC 124 in early December. Koscheck tells White the eye is doing fine but he still feels numbness on the right side of his face and teeth at times. He's surfing? That's nuts. Koscheck says he still has five months of recovery ahead.
On a side note, Tiki Ghosn also saved White's life ... twice (2:08 mark).

UFC QUOTABLES: Martin Kampmann wants to get back to knocking people out starting at UFC on Versus 3
I want to go in there and dictate the pace [against Diego Sanchez]. I want to punch him in the face every time he tries to get in there, and I want to get back to my old days. I want to get back to knocking people out. I started in boxing and Thai boxing, and I think it's time to get back to my roots and start beating people up and standing again...
I like to win, period. If Diego's going to give me submissions, of course I'm going to take it, cause I'm in there to get the win, but I think the fans definitely appreciate knockouts more than submissions, and I don't have any knockouts in the UFC yet, so I think it's about time."
-Martin Kampmann talks to MMAWeekly.com about mistakes he made last October against Jake Shields and getting back to an old style against Diego Sanchez this week on Versus.
Penick's Analysis: It depends on the opponent he's trying to stand up and strike with, but Kampmann can have a lot of success on the feet. It didn't work against Paul Daley, but with his reach advantage he may be able to employ that aspect of his arsenal to great effect against Sanchez this week. Of course, he's also dangerous on his back, and it may be a "pick your poison" type of battle for Sanchez this week. This is a great welterweight fight and I'm excited to see how Kampmann reacts after the Shields loss and how Sanchez builds off an excellent performance against Thiago Silva.

When I?m like 65 I can call Martin Kampmann and be like, Remember when we threw those hooks in the ring? Those are the wars and the one?s you don?t forget. "The whole fight all I was thinking was, ?It?s going to land, it?s going to land, it?s going to land.? I was planning on landing that right hook and dropping him. It landed a couple of times but he didn?t drop. When it all comes down to it I kind of threw the game plan out the window and made it a street fight, and that?s what I did honestly."<Br><Br>

As MMA Arrives in Ontario, Anti-MMA Voices Surface
Filed under: MMA Media Watch
We're used to it by now. Those of us who love mixed martial arts have come to accept that our sport will be subjected to ignorant, unfair commentary from people who don't understand it and don't care to understand it, and that the anti-MMA voices will grow particularly loud any time the sport becomes regulated in an area where it had previously been banned. But even if we're used to it, and it would be easier just to ignore it, sometimes it's valuable to point out some of the over-the-top assertions about MMA that come out in the local media whenever the sport arrives in a new town.
So with MMA recently being legalized in Ontario, let's take a look at some of the problems with this Windsor Star column by Anne Jarvis.

With lightweight roster crunch, Pearson and Fisher could be in jeopardy
Ross Pearson was the winner of Season 9 of "The Ultimate Fighter," but that doesn't mean he's got a job for life with the UFC or even the rest of 2011 for that matter.
The UFC has a short leash when it comes to TUF alums and it has no problem sending a guy to minors if his performances aren't up to snuff. That's pressure. It's even worse for lightweights because the promotion just added a slew of 155ers from the WEC.
The Telegraph's Gareth Davies says the UFC has 68 lightweights under contract and is looking to get the number down to 30. If that's the case, it essentially sets up a single elimination lightweight tourney for much of 2011. It might begin tomorrow with Pearson taking on UFC vet Spencer Fisher at UFC 127.
Watch UFC 127 right here on Yahoo! Sports.
Pearson lost his last fight against Cole Miller while Fisher is 1-2 since Oct. of 2009. Pearson is a good prospect and Fisher has been a great card filler with 15 fights for the UFC. Both should be safe, but you never know. That's why Pearson isn't willing to risk it with a lackluster effort.
"He’s a tough veteran, been around a while, there are no surprises with what he’ll bring, he’s at the age where he is in the final assault in his career - I’m not saying I’ll finish his career by that – coming to the final surge," Pearson said. "I want to make him miss, and make him pay,"
Fisher (24-6, 9-5 UFC) looked outstanding in a win over Aaron Riley. That was a dominant second round stoppage, he wants more this time against the 34-year-old Fisher.
"I like a guy who comes out to fight, applies pressure, it suits my style," Pearson told The Telegraph U.K. "He’s similar in a sense to Aaron Riley – they looked a mirror image of each other when they fought – and I have a similar game plan, but I’ll be using different angles against Spencer."
Pearson (11-4, 3-1 UFC) is not only coming back from his first loss in the UFC, it's his first fight back after knee surgery. Arthroscopic surgery repaired a torn ligament repaired and cleaned bone chips from his knee.
Fellow Brit Paul Kelly, another lightweight, was cut after a loss to Donald Cerrone at UFC 126. Kelly was a respectable 5-4 with the promotion. It's likely he could be brought back as a filler in one-fight spots, especially for upcoming European UFC cards, but for now he's looking to fight his way back onto the big shows.
Fisher and Pearson square off on ION. The 9 p.m. ET broadcast also includes the Alexander Gustafsson-James Te Huna and Riki Fukuda-Nick Ring fights. That follows the telecast of two more preliminary fights on UFC's Facebook page.

"Strikeforce: Feijao vs. Henderson" preview: Two champs get first test
Rafael "Feijao" Cavalcante, who defeated Muhammed "King Mo" Lawal this past August to earn the light heavyweight belt, may have the hardest contest of his career against former dual-division PRIDE champion and perennial contender Dan Henderson.
Marloes Coenen, who defeated Sarah Kaufman one month later to win the women's welterweight title, faces an uncertain test in the unheralded Liz Carmouche.
STRIKEFORCE NEWS: Gurgel and Rogers get new opponents for Strikeforce "Feijao vs. Henderson" prelims
Dayton area fighters Jorge Gurgel and Brian Rogers were both slated for bouts against Tyler Combs and Mojo Horne on the card, but will now meet new opponents as both Combs and Horne were forced out of the event this week.
According to a report from MMAJunkie.com, Gurgel will now meet Billy Vaughn, and Rogers will meet Ian Rammel.
Gurgel returns to action for the first time since a loss to K.J. Noons last August. The former UFC veteran has been on a downslide recently, losing four of his last five fights. He'll look to get back on track against the 9-6 Combs, a six-year veteran who is 3-1 over his last four fights.
Rogers and Rammel are both veterans of the local Ohio fight scene, and both make their debut in Strikeforce on this card.
The main card airs live on Showtime this Saturday, headlined by the Light Heavyweight Championship bout between Rafael "Feijao" Cavalcante and Dan Henderson.

Penick's Analysis: It's unfortunate for all of these guys that they have to fight on such short notice, but at least they're all getting a chance to fight and get paid this weekend. Gurgel is in desperate need of a win, and wants to post a better mark than 1-2 inside the Strikeforce cage, but Combs now has a big opportunity to knock off a fighter that is very well known.
